BYU Commercial Music Division | Program Intro

A Commercial Music degree from BYU offers students the opportunity to learn about today’s music technology, performance, composition, recording and production practices. Coupled with a strong academic music core, the wide range of elective classes give students a diverse range of theoretical and hands-on experience in MIDI sequencing, audio recording, jazz studies, studio and live performance, producing, arranging, songwriting, post scoring for film and video, broadcast audio, entrepreneurship, and other skills needed to prepare to work in today’s music industry.

On-campus resources include a brand-new music building with two state-of-the-art recording studios 5 MIDI production studios bursting with the latest in music production technology, a dedicated music-tech lab with 25 digital audio workstations featuring the latest recording and production software. Knowledgeable faculty who are skilled industry professionals bring real world experience into the classroom. There are two tracks within the Commercial Music degree:
1. Production Track
2. Performance Track / Jazz Track

Production Track

This track encompasses the full breadth of the commercial music degree giving student a diverse experience in many music production technologies, applications and music industry scenarios. Students are allowed to explore a wide range of career possibilities and then choose from a set of advanced electives to hone select skill sets for their chosen area of specialization.

The Production track is recommended for students interested in: Media & Film Composing / Recording Engineers / Audio Post-Production Engineers / Sound Design / Live Music Engineers / Music Producers / Singer-Songwriters

Performance Track / Jazz Track

This track is for students that want a more focused approach for their instrument/vocal training and performing. There are more options for private lessons and ensemble participation, and it resembles a performance degree to some respect, but students will take select commercial music core of classes that teach a necessary foundation in music production technology, music creation, and music business principles. Students are not required to take advanced level courses in those areas and can focus more on the mastery of their specific instrument.

The Jazz Track is for those students who wish to make jazz the center of their academic study, performance, and ensemble participation.

The Performance track is recommended for students interested in:

Jazz Musician / Jazz Instructor / Studio & Recording Musician / Stage and Concert performers / Singer-Songwriters
