HORN

Audition Requirements

Auditions will be by video recording only; no live auditions.

Please make a video recording of the following:

A. Horn Performance:

  1. W.A. Mozart Horn Concerto Number 2, K. 417; First Movement
  2. Richard Strauss Horn Concerto No. 1, 3rd Movement
    • Accompaniment is not required.
  3. Shostakovich Symphony No. 5, Movement 1, rehearsal 17 – 2nd measure of 21, first horn part
  4. Frank Symphony in D minor; Movement 2, measures 29 – 48
    • These should be played without any accompaniment.

B. Personal Statements and Singing

  1. Describe what you like about playing the horn and tell me about your hopes and dreams as a horn player. Be bold and tell me where you would love to be as a horn player in ten years. Also, tell me if you plan to major in music performance, music education or a major outside of music.
  2. Why BYU? What makes you want to attend BYU and especially why do you want to study the horn at BYU?
  3. Sing the melody to “Happy Birthday” without accompaniment in a key that is comfortable for you.
  4. Sing the first verse melody of “O Christmas Tree” without accompaniment in a key that is comfortable for you.

Instructions for videos:

  1. Each piece may be recorded separately, but do not edit the performances.
  2. Record in a space with a little reverberance. A bedroom is not a good place for this.
  3. Do not play with your bell pointed at either the microphone or at a soft surface (like a couch).
  4. Be sure that your instrument and face are visible in the video.
  5. It is highly encouraged that you use a separate recording device for the audio. Tascam and Zoom make excellent and affordable digital recorders. The audio from the digital recorder can then be synced with the video from your phone. Once you’ve synced the audio from the recorder, mute the audio from the phone.
Upload a recording to YouTube and include a link to it in your application in SOMIS.

Videos are due by January 27, 2024.
