Audition Requirements

Prescreening Requirements


There are two degree programs in the School of Music that offer Contemporary Voice as an instrument option: BM in Commercial Music and BA in Music.

Students applying for the Commercial Music Program will NOT need to complete the pre-screening process. If those applying for Commercial Music pass the portfolio requirement you will be invited to the live audition in January. (Please see requirement below)

Those auditioning for the BA in Music with Contemporary Voice as their instrument MUST complete the pre-screening process. This process includes the following:

  1. Complete the online School of Music application and letter(s) of recommendation at /apply.
  2. Upload your pre-screening audition recording to YouTube by December 1. Follow the directions provided below after submitting your application.
  3. Prospective students who pass the pre-screening process will be invited to perform a live audition. Only students who have completed the application process by December 1 will be considered in the pre-screening process for the live auditions in January.

Pre-Screening Audition Requirements

  1. Prepare two pieces contrasting nature in a contemporary style (jazz, pop, country, rock, NO musical theatre). Each piece should be 90 seconds or less.
  2. Students may play for themselves for 1of the two selections. One piece must have a minus track or use a separate accompanist (piano, guitar, etc.) so that we can see how you perform without your instrument.

  3. In addition, please sing a third song classical in nature. This can be a hymn or art song. This piece should be 90 seconds or less
    4. Please no acapella singing.
    5. All selections need to be on the same video. No separate videos.

Live Audition Requirements

Commercial Music and BA in Music candidates, if you are invited to the live audition you will sing two contrasting songs in a contemporary style. One song may be self-accompanied, a skilled pianist will be provided, or you may bring your own. You may also being a minus track. Only those auditioning are allowed in the audition room.

Please prepare TWO contrasting selections, (upbeat & ballad), no longer than 90 seconds each, demonstrating your understanding of a contemporary vocal sound.

  • Songs can be ANY contemporary genre, i.e: jazz, country, pop/rock, indie, etc. Original material is not required but accepted for one of your selections.
  • Please NO MUSICAL THEATRE. NO ACAPELLA.
  • Both pieces need to be under 3 min combined.
