Audition Requirements
  • Keyboard Application Materials

    Upload the following to the Supplemental Material section of the online application:

    • Repertoire list of works both 1) studied and completed with a teacher, and 2) performed. For performed works, please include where and when the performance occurred.

    Audition

    The audition will be arranged directly with your intended studio teacher.

    If you are unable to attend an audition, a recording of your senior recital or an equivalent performance is an acceptable alternative. The recording must be accessible online (e.g., YouTube, Vimeo, Dropbox) and the link must be included in your online application in the Portfolio section.

    Keyboard Audition Repertoire

    Piano Audition Repertoire (must be performed by memory)

    • A complete major work by J. S. Bach (prelude and fugue, set of dances, toccata, etc.). Inventions or other intermediate-level pieces are not acceptable.
    • A complete classical sonata by Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, or Schubert.
    • A third work your choice from the romantic or contemporary periods. This work must be of moderately difficult level or higher, as defined in Maurice Hinson’s Guide to the Pianist’s Repertoire, a standard piano repertoire reference text.
    • All major and three forms of minor scales at MM 152 in 16th notes, and all major and minor arpeggios at MM 152 in triplets.

    Organ Audition Repertoire (performance by memory optional)

    • A major work by J. S. Bach (prelude/fantasia/toccata and fugue, trio sonata movements 1 and 2 or 2 and 3, large chorale setting, etc.).
    • A major work from the nineteenth- or twentieth-century repertoire. If an extended section in expressive style is not included, prepare another piece in that style.
    • A hymn (all verses).
    • Major and minor scales and arpeggios in two keys and a selection of technical studies from Hanon (or equivalent).

  • Strings Application Materials

    Upload the following to the Supplemental Material section of the online application:

    • Repertoire list of works both 1) studied and completed with a teacher, and 2) performed. For performed works, please include where and when the performance occurred.

    Audition

    Violin and Cello list required repertoire, below.

    If you have concerns about your audition repertoire, contact your intended studio professor.

    Violin Audition

    • One movement from a Romantic sonata, late Beethoven or later composer
    • One movement from a Romantic concerto, like Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Sibelius, etc.
    • One movement from a Bach solo sonata or other Baroque piece
    • One Paganini Caprice of your choice

    You can plan on the audition lasting around 20 minutes. We would like to see a variety of styles and skills.

    Cello Audition

    Technique

    Choose one of the following, memorized:

    • Popper étude (High school of cello playing [40 études] op. 73)
    • Piatti étude (12 Caprices, op. 25)

    Repertoire

    • One movement of a standard concerto, memorized.
    • One movement of a sonata from a period other than that of the concerto.
    • Two contrasting movements from the cello suites of J. S. Bach IV, V, or VI. For example: Prelude and Courante, Sarabande and Gigue.

    Double Bass Audition

    Two contrasting movements from each of the following categories:

    • Bach: Solo Cello Suite or Gamba sonata.
    • Classical concerto or sonata (ex: Vanhal, Dittersdorf, Sperger, Hoffmeister, Schubert, or similar)
    • Romantic/modern concerto or sonta ( Bottesini, Koussevitzky, Míšek, Tubin, Rota, Hindemith, Hertel, or similar)

    Applicable cadenzas are welcomed but not required. The movements may be presented in either solo or orchestral tuning. If the work originally had keyboard accompaniment, it is highly recommended that it be included in the performance.

    Winds, Brass, Percussion

    Application Materials

    Portfolio

    Those applying to the vocal performance program must include prescreening videos as part of their application.

    • Video(s) should include three contrasting pieces, one of which is an art song and one of which is an aria. 

    Applicants will be notified of the results from the prescreening by January 15.

    Audition

    The audition will be arranged directly with your intended studio teacher.

    Repertoire

    For your audition, please prepare a 20-minute program including pieces in Italian, French, German, and English. Literature should be included which represents German lieder, French mélodie, pieces composed before 1800, and pieces from the twentieth century or later. You may include other selections as time permits. A pianist will be provided.

Graduate Admissions

The deadline for the online application is December 1. Failure to submit all required materials by the deadline may prevent review of the application. All applicants are considered for financial awards and assistantships without additional application.
