Jazz Audition Information

We are delighted that you want to participate in one or more of the groups. Group placements are based on your interests, availability, and experience level. We do our very best to place as many of you as we possibly can in groups.

Jazz Ensembles

Synthesis (Big Band)

Meets MW 3:00 - 4:50

Jazz Ensemble (Big Band)

Meets T/TH 5:00 – 6:50

Jazz Lab Band (Big Band)

Meets Tuesdays 7:00 – 8:50

Jazz Legacy Band

Pre-bebop / traditional and early eras of jazz focus – meets MW 12:00 – 12:50

Syncopation

Vocal Jazz Ensemble (with Rhythm Section Combo) - Meets T/TH 12:00 - 1:50

Combos

Mainstream Jazz, Salsa, and Commercial Music
(TBD - combos meet at various times, which are determined by participants’ availability and experience level)

WHEN and WHERE


Auditions happen during the first three days of the semester. Auditions are simultaneously held by instrument for all the groups. See the specifics for your instrument(s) below.

Will be emailed by Friday, Sep. 2 at 3:00 pm.

COMBO MEETING


There will be a mandatory meeting with Dr. Bromley via zoom on Friday, Sep. 2 at 3:00 pm for ALL combo participants.

FIRST REHEARSAL

All ensembles will begin meeting in person at their normal scheduled times during the second week of the semester (September 6 – 9).

  • When – Wednesday, August 31, from 3:00 to 6:00 pm.  Plan to attend the entire audition, which will likely last more than two hours and may go as late as 6:00 pm.  Bring homework or something to study.  

    Sign-up sheet for a specific audition time will be posted on Dr. Nichols' door (E-451) by the first day of classes.

    Where – Starts in E451 and then moves to de Jong concert hall foyer - south side, 4th flour

    Audition Materials – You will do individual and group auditions.Bring a short etude / transcription, or jazz standard of your choosing to perform and/or improvise over. Be prepared to sight read and improvise on materials we will provide. After all have played individually, you will play in a section audition.

  • When & Where: Wednesday, August 31, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, at Dr. Kimball’s office (E465 HFAC)

    Audition Materials – Prepared music posted on Dr. Kimball’s door (E465 HFAC), plus sightreading and optional improvisation.

    Audition Materials – For your audition, you will play selections with the rhythm section. You will be asked to play the melody, comp the chords, and improvise a solo on the standard bossa nova tune Blue Bossa, and you will be asked to sight read.

  • Syncopation is the vocal jazz ensemble for BYU. It consists of eight to twelve vocalists and a three-piece rhythm section who perform a challenging and varied repertoire of jazz, blues and pop music, emphasizing close vocal harmonies and improvisation which meets Tues/Thurs 12-1:50pm in A-244.

    Vocal spots for big bands and combos are also available.

    AUDITIONS

    Audition Materials – Sing a jazz swing standard of your choice, a cappella. You will also be asked to sight sing and improvise.
