Biography

Since 1987, professor of music history Dr. Steven Johnson has taught courses ranging from introduction to music history, to graduate and honors seminar courses at BYU. Before coming to BYU, Dr. Johnson was a professor of music history at California State University Fullerton, from 1982–1987. Dr. Johnson’s professional activities also include editing and contributions to The New York Schools of Music Visual Arts, as well as numerous entries for New Groves Dictionary of Music and Musicians, among others. Johnson’s expertise has also been solicited for peer review by publications including Journal of the American Musicological Society, American Music, and Oxford University Press.

Dr. Johnson has been invited to present papers on numerous occasions, for events such as the Society of Music Theory and the American Musicological Society Regional Conference, as well as the Centennial Festival at the New School in New York City. Dr. Johnson’s professional commitments have been to the Rank Advancement Committee both as a Chair and committee member, an Area Head of Musicology, and a member of the Department Search Committee of Music History.
