Biography

Christian Tran enjoys a multifaceted career as an oboist and educator. He has performed in a variety of venues, from casinos in Las Vegas to cafes in Hanoi to elementary school classrooms in Jersey City to New York City’s Carnegie Hall. While in New York City, he worked with many notable ensembles such as Protestra, the New Amsterdam Opera, the Garden State Philharmonic, and the Musicians Club of New York, to name a few.

A fierce supporter of fellow Vietnamese musicians, Christian has extensively researched, catalogued, and performed oboe repertoire by Vietnamese composers. In 2019, he was invited to give the opening recital of the International Double Reed Society Convention in Tampa, Florida, where he showcased this music. Christian also advocates regularly for new music and has premiered or commissioned works by many composers, including Alexandros Darna, David Ashton, and Judith Shatin.

Prior to his appointment as Assistant Professor of Oboe at Brigham Young University, Christian taught undergraduate oboe students and chamber music at Stony Brook University. Additionally, he has taught at the Marymount School of New York and the Vietnam National Academy of Music Pre-College. He maintains a diverse private studio where he loves to teach musicians of all ages and abilities.

Christian holds degrees from Stony Brook University (DMA), the Manhattan School of Music (MM), and Brigham Young University (BM). His primary teachers include James Austin Smith, Stephen Taylor, Geralyn Giovannetti, and Martin Radunz.
