Audition using the following material. If you cannot attend the live auditions, upload a recording to YouTube and include it in your application in SOMIS. In your recording, please make sure the embouchure and hands are visible. Audio-only recordings will not be accepted.
Repertoire
Two contrasting solos or solo movements, to demonstrate:
- Technical facility: a movement or piece with generous quick passages to demonstrate finger technique, range, articulation, and rhythmic control.
- Lyricism: a movement or piece to demonstrate tone, musicality, and legato.
The two selections should represent different time periods and styles. Examples of appropriate audition repertoire are listed below. Do not feel obligated to play the music from the examples; any two contrasting standard works from the oboe repertoire could make a successful audition. If you have any questions about repertoire or auditioning, please contact Dr. Tran at christian_tran@byu.edu.
