Audition Requirements
Choral Conducting
Upload the following to the indicated sections of the online application:
Supplemental Materials
- A list of all choral experience, including private study, conducting, and ensembles in which you have sung; and a list of pieces, along with composers, that you rehearsed and performed as conductor, including name of ensemble(s) and dates.
Portfolio
- Video of representative rehearsal and performance where choir was trained and conducted by you.
Those who pass the preliminary screening of applicants will be notified by January 15 and invited to campus for a personal interview/audition with Professors Crane and Wells. You will be asked to conduct previously assigned pieces with the University Chorale, sing a prepared song, and demonstrate keyboard proficiency.
Instrumental Conducting
Prior to submitting your application, contact Dr. Shawn Smith, who oversees the instrumental conducting graduate program, to answer any questions regarding preparation for your live audition and/or advice on suitability of materials selected for upload with your online application.

- Repertoire list of works rehearsed and/or performed as a conductor, if applicable.
Portfolio
- Video of a past solo performance showing your proficiency and technical and expressive facility on your major instrument (3–5 minutes) You may choose to fulfill this requirement by either uploading a recording of a past solo performance or preparing an audition for Graduate Audition Day.
- Video of conducting a performance (preferably full face view of conductor, 20–30 minutes)
- Video of conducting a rehearsal (preferably full face view of conductor, 20–30 minutes)
