Biography
Will Kimball is Professor of Trombone at Brigham Young University. He has previously held full-time teaching positions at the University of Northern Iowa and Arkansas Tech University as well as part-time positions at Arizona State University and Boston University. On the subject of breathing for musicians, Kimball has been a clinician at more than 20 of the nation’s most prestigious universities and conservatories, including Juilliard, Cincinnati Conservatory, University of Michigan, Yale University, Indiana University, University of North Texas, San Francisco Conservatory, and Boston University. Kimball’s website, which features research on breathing, alto trombone, and the history of the trombone, continues to be one of the most popular trombone websites and is referenced in numerous dissertations, academic journals, and scholarly books.
As a performer, Kimball has recorded a wide range of music, including a solo album, trombone quartet album, brass quintet album, and two traditional jazz albums. His commercial recording credits have included music for ESPN, the Discovery Channel, Starz Network, and Disney, as well as soundtracks for motion pictures such as “The Sandlot” and “Forever Strong.” Kimball has performed extensively as a substitute/extra trombonist with the Utah Symphony (more than 200 concerts) and Phoenix Symphony. He has also won principal trombone positions, all of them through blind auditions, with the following regional orchestras: Ballet West Orchestra (Salt Lake City, Utah), Cedar Rapids Symphony (now Orchestra Iowa), Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony (Iowa), and Arkansas Symphony. He has performed at many festivals and conferences, including the International Trombone Festival, American Trombone Workshop, SliderAsia, and Big 12 Trombone Conference.
Kimball’s students have been accepted at many of the nation’s most competitive institutions, including Juilliard, Curtis Institute of Music, Manhattan School of Music, Yale University, Northwestern University, New England Conservatory, San Francisco Conservatory, Indiana University, University of Michigan, University of North Texas, UCLA, Temple University, and Arizona State University.
His own teachers were Daniel Bachelder, Larry Zalkind, Murray Crewe, Brian Bowman (euphonium), Scott Hartman, and Gail Wilson.
