Biography

Nathan Hurst is a professional percussionist and musical educator. With energy at the core of his artistry, Hurst has performed in China, Mongolia, Japan, South Korea, Austria, Germany, England, France, Italy, and Switzerland. His versatility in various genres has led him to performances with Colin Currie, Massamba Diop, Mikael Ringquist, Marcus Santos, Itzhak Perlman, Randy Brecker, Ed Calle, Rubén Álvarez, Collin Raye, Keith Carlock, among others. As a freelance musician, Nathan performs regularly with the Utah Symphony and Ballet West. A new music artist, Hurst has performed modern works including the premiere of Vietnamese composer P.Q. Phan’s opera, “What the Horse Eats.” He recorded on marimba alongside bassoon composer Thomas Priest including Priest’s quartet “The Forest for the Trees” and the duet “Reminiscent Rains.” As an educator, Hurst is currently on faculty at Utah Valley University where he has taught courses in music history, theory, percussion techniques, directed the Wolverine Steel Band, co-directed the percussion ensemble, and worked closely with music majors and minors. Nathan earned a MM from Indiana University in Percussion Performance and a BM from Brigham Young University in Percussion Performance.
