Dr. Heidi Reed, adjunct professor of ethnomusicology, teaches the world music class for the general student population. She thoroughly enjoys connecting music to her student's chosen areas of study—yes, even STEM majors. In addition to teaching, she participates as a community member of Gamelan Bintang Wahyu.
Dr. Reed received her DMA and Certificate in Ethnomusicology from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, where she played oboe in the Symphony Orchestra, Casella Sinfonietta, and Wind Ensemble, as well as the mandolin in the Old Time Ensemble. She recently obtained a washboard, hoping to expand her Old Time experiences.
Dr. Reed is fascinated by cultural boundaries, the idea of borrowing between these boundaries, and the importance of reciprocity when doing so. She investigates the task of 'translating' music as it moves between cultures, as well as women's role in establishing church doctrine through children's music. Dr. Reed is also an absolute nerd about any and all things related to reeds and reed instruments. (Some call it fate, others, nominative determinism.)
