Biography
Deanne Helquist is adjunct faculty in the BYU School of Music where she co-teaches Exploration of Teaching Music and supervises string orchestra student teachers. She is also one of the directors of the BYU New Horizon Orchestra, and adjunct faculty at UVU, supervising string orchestra student teachers.
Deanne taught middle, junior and senior high school orchestras in the Davis, Alpine and Nebo School Districts. After leaving the Alpine School District in 1985, she joined the Music Education Department at BYU where, for 16 years, she was adjunct faculty, teaching String Workshop and co-teaching Exploration of Teaching Music. In 2001 she returned to the public schools, teaching string orchestras in the Nebo School District until her retirement in June, 2017.
Deanne has had extensive Suzuki training on the violin and has participated extensively in the Suzuki Association of the Americas and the Suzuki Association of Utah, where she served for four years as Violin Vice-President. Her other professional affiliations include membership in ASTA and UMEA/NAƒME. She has served as president of Utah ASTA and is currently on Utah’s ASTA board. She also served as UMEA’s Orchestra Vice-President and as chairman of the UMEA State Jr. High School Orchestra Festival. Her awards include UMEA’s Outstanding Junior High/Middle School Music Educator 2006-2007 and the Utah ASTA 2010 Outstanding Secondary Teacher of the Year. She was also honored in 2010 by KSL Newsradio and Zions Bank’s Teacher Feature as “Utah’s Teacher of the Week.”
