Biography
Dr. Brian Woodbury is an in-demand trombonist, composer, arranger, and educator from Salt Lake City, Utah. He has performed with several groups, including Johnny Mathis, The Glenn Miller Orchestra, The NYChillharmonic, the Brad Leali Jazz Orchestra, the UNC Jazz Festival All-Stars, Joe Gransden, the Drew Zaremba Fellowship, the Steve Lippia Orchestra, the Utah Metropolitan Ballet, Debby Boone, Stockton Helbing, and Porfi Baloa y sus Adolescentes. Dr. Woodbury has recorded with many groups including Erin Dickins, the Neon Trees, Jason Scheff, Annie Booth, Hot House West, Ryan Haines, Alex Heitlinger, Jay Lawrence, the New Hot Five, Stephanie Mabey, and the One O’Clock Lab Band. He is featured on the soundtracks for Honor of Kings, LEGO® Fortnite® Star Wars, and The Paradise Planets: The Fallen from Paradise. His 2021 debut album of original compositions, Dream Feeder, is on all streaming platforms.
Brian received his Bachelor of Music in Brass Performance from Brigham Young University, and his Master of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas, where he was lead trombone in the One O’Clock Lab Band and directed the Five O’Clock and Nine O’Clock Lab Bands, and taught Jazz Trombone Fundamentals. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts in Jazz Studies from the University of Colorado Boulder, where he directed Big Band, Jazz Combos, taught Jazz History, and was the Visiting Professor of Jazz Trombone.
Before being appointed the Director of Jazz Studies at BYU, Dr. Woodbury worked as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies for the University of Utah where he directed the Jazz Repertory Ensemble and Jazz Combos as well as teaching Jazz Trombone, Improv I, and Improv II. He also taught Commercial Music private lessons at Utah Valley University.
