In Composition, New Music, Students

Brigham Young University’s Group for New Music: Student Edition will premiere a variety of student compositions Tuesday Apr. 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall in the Harris Fine Arts Center at BYU. Admission is free.

Group for New Music is not a standing ensemble, but a collaboration of music students. The group includes a variety of music from the gamelan ensemble at BYU to a clarinet quartet and even electronic pieces created in studio.

One student, Nicolás Ayala, is a senior studying music composition at BYU. His piece entitled “Facsimile #1” will be featured in the performance. Ayala’s piece is a fixed-media electronic piece without performers.

“‘Facsimile #1’ is based on the sounds of a copying machine and the inspiration for the structure of the piece comes from listening and analyzing the trajectory of a piece of paper as it moves through a copy machine,” Ayala said. “The sounds used are all extracted from a recording of the copying process and are manipulated to create a unique soundscape.”
