The annual collaborative concert will include jazz standards and unique, new arrangements
“This concert will be filled with jazz standards and hits sure to warm you up for Valentine’s Day,” Mark Ammons, director of the Jazz Ensemble said. “I’m always excited about this February collaborative concert with Jazz Voices. The director of Jazz Voices, Emily Merrell, does a great job preparing her excellent group.”
“This annual collaboration is something Jazz Voices always looks forward to,” Merrell said. “Mark Ammons and the Jazz Ensemble are a fantastic group of artists and people. It’s a joy and a privilege to share a stage with our good friends. We’re premiering several brand-new arrangements and will have a great variety, from swing, to funk, to mambo.”
Along with their tight vocals and complex harmonies, one of the things that makes Jazz Voices stand out are the arrangements of songs done by members of the group. This performance will feature “Taking a Chance on Love,” arranged by alto Erica Peterson, “Dorothy Dandridge Eyes,” arranged by tenor Micah Wood and “Moose the Mooche,” arranged by Merrell.
“I think we have a really unique group,” Wood said. “We’re one of the only groups that features vocalists and instrumentalists as equal members, and we’re the only group on campus that has vocalists doing jazz, with six-eight voice parts and really tight harmonies.”
With the wide variety of styles that will be performed, there will be something to appeal to everyone in the audience, even those who may be skeptical of jazz.
“A lot of people don’t think they like jazz,” Wood said. “But I think that’s because they have a certain perception of what jazz is, and they don’t like that specific thing. Jazz Voices performs a really wide variety of jazz, and it’s all very enjoyable. It will be great, both for those who consider themselves to be jazz musicians, and for those who feel like they just want to listen to some fun music.”
“The Jazz Ensemble will definitely be cookin’ by then,” Ammons said. “This should be a fun concert.”
