BYU Bands

BYU Bands have been an important part of Brigham Young University for more than 100 years. Their performances include on-campus concerts as well as marching/pep band performances in LaVell Edwards Stadium and the Marriott Center. Our groups can be seen and heard in regional, national, and international performances. They are also often featured on BYU TV. The international presence of our top wind band — the BYU Wind Symphony is well noted–as it is referred to as America’s most traveled University Band.

Presently, our bands consist of two auditioned ensembles (Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band), two winter semester non-auditioned concert ensembles (University Bands), the Cougar Marching Band, and two basketball pep bands (ROC Bands). All of these groups rehearse in either the Harris Fine Arts Center or our Cougar Marching Band Hall in LaVell Edwards Stadium

The finest woodwind, brass, and percussion players at Brigham Young University perform with the Wind Symphony, under the direction of Donald Peterson. The BYU Wind Symphony maintains an active performance schedule with programming that ranges from wind band classics to some of the newest wind repertoire. Participation in commissioning consortiums and hosting composers on campus avails ensemble members with opportunities to experience these new works in meaningful ways.

Consisting of approximately 75 performers, the Symphonic Band is devoted to the performance of the finest band masterpieces from a variety of historic periods, new music for the wind idiom, and compositions from our faculty and student composers. The Symphonic Band fosters the highest performance standards while offering its members an opportunity to expand their artistic, technical, and performance horizons. The ensemble performs two concerts each semester in the de Jong Concert hall, and each year their best performances are included in the BYU Bands in Review CD.

Although the majority of the ensemble members are music majors, the Symphonic Bands also offers the talented non-major unequaled opportunities for continued music performance and growth. Membership in the BYU Symphonic Band is determined by audition in the fall of each academic year.

The two University Bands are non-auditioned ensembles that meet one evening per week (either Tuesday or Thursday) during winter semester. These ensembles provide a great opportunity for non-majors, fall marching band members, and all interested students to continue performing on their instrument as a member of a quality concert band.
