• For my four year old, attending music class was like exploring a new world. He loved it all, the visiting music students who demonstrated and taught about various instruments, to the take home packets, to the self-directed play time. I could not have imagined a kinder more supportive teacher and student aid. They knew my child’s name and consistently took the time to nurture his curiosity. Thank you for a great experience!

  • BYU does a fantastic job of teaching kids about music. My daughter loved going every week! She learned so much and now has a love of music. She asks me daily to sign her up for violin lessons and she would never have known about a violin if it weren’t for this course.

  • The Young Musician Academy has brought lots of joy to our family. Our little ones are singing the songs they learned everywhere they go – at a playground, at a grocery store, during the bed night routine – you name it. The variety of musical instruments is incredible as well as the guest speakers and teachers. So sad we are leaving Utah, it would be hard to find a gem like this somewhere else.

The BYU Young Musicians Academy was established to encourage music in the home by offering quality music experiences for preschool children and their parents. Moreover, it serves as a music teaching and observing laboratory for Music Education, Elementary Education, and Early Childhood Education majors. This program offers the following weekly classes: Parent/Toddler (20 months-2 years old), Music Explorers (3 years old), Music Makers (4 years old), and Music Creators (5-6 years old).

The Young Musicians Academy is a series of classes for preschool infants, children and their parents. Based on the belief that young children learn best when they are free to play and make discoveries as they play, these weekly classes provide rich music environments where children may explore a variety of music instruments, recordings, songs and music toys without structured teaching. Parents and teachers serve as partners in the play, and learn ways to expand children’s understanding as they observe, label behaviors and make music with the children. Additionally, participating families will attend the Beverly Taylor Sorenson Family Concert Series held on Brigham Young campus which is geared specifically towards young children.

Newsletters provide background information for parents on such topics as child development, music development, music and the brain, etc. Each newsletter also outlines some appropriate music activities to do at home. In addition, the children may take a recording, music game, or instrument home each week.
