Admission to the MDT program is allowed only in the fall semester and is first dependent upon admission to Brigham Young University. For acceptance as an MDT BFA major, students must successfully pass a three-part entrance audition. Individuals accepted into the program must demonstrate proficiency in two of the following areas and adequate potential in the third.
MUSIC: Two musical theatre excerpts that demonstrate contrasting vocal sounds or styles. One ballad and one up-tempo selection are recommended. Applicants should choose music well-suited to their voice and interpretive capability. Maximum time: three minutes total.
DANCE: In the live audition, applicants will be taught a movement combination which they will perform. In addition, they may perform a two minute choreographed dance of their own that is based on traditional technique. Videotaped auditions should feature the applicant in a two minute dance combination that demonstrates strength, flexibility, musicality, and performance skills. Ballet, jazz, or modern dance are recommended.
THEATRE: Two contrasting monologues from established play, musical or film scripts. One selection should be comedic; one should be serious/dramatic. Both selections should allow the student to reveal basic honesty and clarity of objectives.
Audition Requirements:
1)Avoid reading poetry, performing Shakespeare and other verse and/or period monologues.
2)Look for scenes wherein the character you are portraying has a strong need or objective and is speaking directly to an identifiable partner.
3)Select characters that are your gender and race, as well as close to your age.
4)Maximum time for both monologues combined is three minutes.
