To the Sky!
This concert is a tribute to man’s quest to fly. From the beginning of recorded history the theme of flight can be found in myth, legend, art, literature, and religion. Orville Wright described this as “an idea that has always impassioned mankind.”

WIND SYMPHONY

March 2, 2017 7:30 p.m.

Wind Band Potpourri
This year’s program is entitled Potpourri because it draws from a variety of Wind Band works. The concert will feature a mix of wind band standards including Holst’s First Suite in Eb, and Bennett’s Symphonic Songs for Band, as well as newer works for band. The evening will be capped with an unforgettable performance of “Georgia on My Mind” by saxophone faculty artist Ray Smith.

Tributes and Escapades
Our concert features music of solemnity, escape, and hilarity. A Movement for Rosa was written to honor Rosa Parks, whose contribution to desegregation still stands today. Release the Hounds is a delightful new work by Daniel Montoya inspired by Homer Simpson’s cartoon character.

Wind Symphony alumnus and University of North Texas professor of trumpet, Jason Bergman returns for a performance of two new works for trumpet and band.

After intermission, we welcome renowned conductor and professor emeritus from the University of Colorado, Allan McMurray, conducting Bernstein’s Overture to Candide. The program concludes with works by two of McMurray’s friends and colleagues, Carter Pann and Frank Ticheli.
