A Message from the Director
Kory L. Katseanes
Education is more than just acquiring knowledge, but is also defining the purpose of understanding.

The Fine Arts help us express the intentions of our faith, our hope, and our striving to embrace beauty. Music and art define us as a people, tapping the deepest and most personal places in our hearts, minds, and spirits. By this means we express, in part, our individual and common faith, and our understanding. At BYU we create, promote and practice the arts because they reflect parts of the beautiful, virtuous, and principled experience in which we believe and which we embrace.
Our mission as the School of Music at Brigham Young University is to assist individuals, both majors and non-majors, in their quest for perfection and eternal life. As faculty, administrators, and staff we are here to provide a period of intense learning that will enable our students to think clearly about diverse kinds of music and to create, perform, and teach music well. When our students graduate they will leave spiritually strengthened and intellectually enlarged. They will have developed strong moral character leading them to lifelong learning and service.
Our objectives are:
- To prepare professional musicians who demonstrate those skills that will enable them to communicate effectively about and through music, including music theory, history and literature, pedagogy, conducting, and performance.
- To prepare outstanding music educators to receive Utah State teaching credentials, qualifying them to teach in public and private institutions.
- To provide all Brigham Young University students with opportunities to broaden their musical understanding and enrich their lifestyles through course work and school-sponsored concerts.
- To offer non-music majors, who have the appropriate skills, a wide range of ensemble experiences, as well as the opportunity to advance their performance levels through private instruction.
- To provide a variety of musical experiences for the university and surrounding communities through concerts, concert tours, festivals, and workshops.
- To maintain suitable and attractive facilities in which appropriate academic and performance activities can take place.
- To provide a professionally competent faculty and support the professional growth of that faculty.
We invite you to visit the School of Music at BYU, to feel the nurturing environment maintained by our dedicated faculty, staff and administration. Please, feel free to contact the School of Music to speak directly with an instructor or myself.
Sincerely,
Kory L. Katseanes, Director
