Scholarships
Brigham Young University is sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and as such members of the Church are given the benefit of reduced tuition. The School of Music administers music scholarships in performance and other fields. Music scholarships range from modest awards to full tuition plus lesson fees. Freshman awards in music are based on the entrance audition.
Scholarship Requirements
- Students must be a music major to be considered for music scholarships. For new freshmen or transfer students who plan on auditioning for the School of Music, scholarship decisions will be made based on their admission application and audition.
- Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA.
- Students must be enrolled in at least 12 credit hours during the fall and winter semesters and at least 6 credit hours during the spring and summer terms.
How To Apply
The School of Music scholarship application process is done online at music.byu.edu/somis . New students who are applying for The School of Music can apply for a scholarship at the bottom of their admissions application. Students who are already admitted to The School of Music can apply for scholarships at the bottom of their home page on the SOMIS website.
The University Admission Application (your application to BYU in general) must be submitted by February 15 for you to be eligible for music awards. Other forms of financial aid—academic scholarships, Pell Grants, and Stafford Loans—are administered by the Student Financial Aid Office:

Endowments and Scholarships Available
Music performance scholarships are financed through university-budgeted funds and through the performance scholarship endowment funds listed below. Biographical information is given where possible.
- Elizabeth Bagley
Piano/Organ/Harp - Professor J. R. and Jane Elizabeth Boshard Music Scholarship
For full-time graduate students majoring in music performance who have demonstrated a commitment to making music their professional career. Professor Boshard was a Utah Valley pioneer. Born in Switzerland , he crossed the plains when he was 12. He led the Provo Tabernacle Choir for 41 years and was music supervisor for Provo 's public schools for 27 years. He was regarded as one of Provo 's foremost citizens while he was alive and was mourned widely upon his death in 1928. His legacy of musical excellence and community spirit can still be seen today in the relatively strong support given to the arts by the small communities of this region. Jane Elizabeth Boshard, Professor Boshard's wife, devoted her life to her family and to charitable work in the community. - Clyn Barrus

Vocal/Piano/Organ - Norma Poulton Bullock Memorial Scholarship
For full-time undergraduate students who have demonstrated extraordinary abilities in voice. Norma Poulton Bullock was an accomplished vocalist who, wherever she lived, was a leader in promoting opportunities for the community to hear fine musical artists brought in from other communities and states. - Ariel Bybee Vocal Scholarship
For full-time students enrolled in music theatre or opera classes. Ariel Bybee, a BYU music graduate, is a soloist with the Metropolitan Opera. - Clark-Mathesius Fund
For the promotion of music. Herald R. Clark was a BYU administrator and an active promoter of music on the BYU campus. Through his efforts many world-famous musicians came to Provo to perform. In support of Herald R. Clark's activities, and to add to other funds raised by him, Dr. Walther Mathesius and his wife, Ebba, of Chicago , Illinois , made a substantial donation that was presented to the university in 1956. - Class of 1919 Endowment
For outstanding voice students. This fund, established by the BYU Class of 1919, originally provided a medal to the winner of a music contest. For most of its existence, however, the income from the fund has been used for scholarships, since it was felt that scholarships would be more beneficial to students. - Vinnie Clawson Scholarship

For full-time students who are active members of the Young Ambassadors. - Lee and Juanita Bott Glenn and Family Scholarship
For pianists. Lee and Juanita Bott Glenn were the parents of three talented pianists. Lee Jay and Mildred were accomplished pianists who performed throughout the country. Homer also played the piano but was killed in an automobile accident when he was 17. - Grow Music Endowment
For qualifying participants in Opera. - John R. Halliday Music Endowment
For graduate choral conducting students. John R. Halliday was a member of the BYU music faculty for over 30 years. He taught honors music theory and bands and was the founder of the BYU Oratorio Choir, the predecessor of the BYU Concert Choir. He was also involved in the design of the Harris Fine Arts Center. Dr. Halliday retired in 1976 and died in 1988 at the age of 76. Fund-raising for the endowment was initiated by former missionaries who had served in the Italy Milan Mission under Dr. Halliday's presidency. - J. Delos Jewkes Scholarship
For undergraduate vocal majors. J. Delos Jewkes, who had been a bass soloist with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in the early 1920s, began a 60-year singing and acting career in 1925, performing in opera, theatre, vaudeville, movies, radio, and television. - J.J.Keeler

Composition/Horn - Franklin and Florence Madsen and Marguerite Jepperson Memorial Music Scholarship Funds
For LDS students making satisfactory progress toward a bachelor's degree in music. Florence Jepperson Madsen, born and raised in Provo , graduated from Boston 's New England Conservatory in 1909. She began teaching full-time at BYU in 1920, when she was asked to serve as chair of the department. A vocalist, conductor, arranger, and composer, she led special choirs sponsored by the LDS Church in Provo , Salt Lake City , and the British Isles and was a member of the Relief Society General Board. Her husband, Franklin Madsen, a physics professor and dean of the College of Physical and Engineering Sciences at BYU, was also an accomplished musician. The Harris Fine Arts Center's recital hall is named in honor of Franklin and Florence Jepperson Madsen. - Olive S. Mensel Scholarship
For students participating in the orchestra. Olive S. Mensel was the chair of community concerts in Provo for 25 years. She worked hard to get the best musicians in Provo so its citizens and the students at BYU could experience their music. - Dimitri Mitropoulous Music Foundation
For string instrument performers. Dimitri Mitropoulous, renowned conductor, was music director of the Minnesota Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic. He established this fund with a donation given during a visit to BYU in 1955. - Karena Beth Mittleman
MDT - C. H. Nye Music Endowment
For the general purposes of the School of Music . This endowment came as a bequest to the BYU School of Music from the estate of C. H. Nye of Farmington , New Mexico. - Dallan M. Pack Memorial Scholarship
For students pursuing careers in music with an emphasis in composition, theory, or media music. A graduate of BYU, Dallan M. Pack received an MA in composition from North Texas State University in 1978. He traveled throughout the Orient and the Pacific entertaining American troops in the field and in hospitals during and after the Vietnam War. He wrote a number of special arrangements of LDS hymns, as well as songs, short stories, and two musicals. - Peery
Majors with financial needs - Leonard Pennario Endowment for Piano and Chamber Music
For students studying piano and chamber music. This endowment fund was established in honor of Leonard Pennario, the acclaimed concert pianist. - Presser Foundation Scholarship
For outstanding senior music education major. The Presser Foundation is a major national philanthropy established in a bequest from the will of the late music publisher Theodore Presser. - Edith Reed Utah Federation of Music Clubs Endowment
For pianists, vocalists, or string players who have participated in at least six UFMC festivals. The Utah Federation of Music Clubs has long been a contributor to music scholarships at Utah colleges. For wind instrument students. John Grant Reed was a prominent Salt Lake performer and wind instrument teacher who took great interest in the progress of his former pupils at BYU. - Roy Samuelson

For string instrumentalists. A violinist, pedagogue, and for 20 years conductor of the BYU Symphony Orchestra, Lawrence Sardoni exerted a lasting personal and musical influence on several generations of BYU students. - Josephine Callis Spilsbury Scholarship
For vocalists. - Max Steiner Scholarship
For graduate students intending to make a career in music. Max Steiner, called the "Dean of the Film Composers," wrote scores for many of the classic Hollywood films of the 1930s and '40s, including the epic Gone With the Wind. Mrs. Leonette Steiner, in addition to donating the money for this award, donated her husband's scores (they are housed in the Harold B. BYU offers partial scholarships to first- and second-place winners in the Utah State Fair music competition who have been admitted as Undergraduate Day students. - Glenna Jennings Ware
Violin - Louise J. Wimmer Endowment
For vocalists. This endowment was established by a BYU economics professor in memory of his wife. Louise J. Wimmer was a gifted vocalist who studied at Brigham Young University and Roosevelt University in Chicago. Throughout her life she taught and studied voice. - Ralph & Margaret Woodward
Graduate Choral Conducting - George Wright Endowment
For general music students. George Wright is recognized as the greatest theatre organist. A true innovator and exceptional orchestrator, this award is given to encourage others on a similar path.
National Scholarships Available
- Nellie Love Butcher Music Scholarship
For piano and vocal music students.The Nellie Love Butcher Music Scholarship is given annually to a male or female music student who is pursuing an education in Piano or Voice. All applicants must obtain a letter of sponsorship from their local DAR Chapter. The state scholarship chairman will assist in locating the nearest to you. Please send a self-addressed, stamped business-size envelope to obtain the name and address of your state scholarship chairman and an application for the scholarship.
