BYU Marching Band auditions for Fall 2017 opened on April 15. BYU students from any major are welcome to audition and marching experience is not required. To apply, students must fill out an “intent to audition form” at marchingband.byu.edu and submit a recorded audition. Online auditions will be accepted April 15 through May 1. Acceptance notifications can be expected after May 15.
During the 2016 football season, the BYU Marching Band performed Bohemian Rhapsody and pieces by Elvis with a Men in Black twist—the drum major dressed as Elvis while others dressed in the Men in Black style. The band also cheered the Cougars into a win at the most recent bowl game in San Diego against the University of Wyoming.
The 2017 BYU Marching Band promises to live up to the rich experiences the band has provided in the past. The band will begin practicing the week before fall semester classes resume—working from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday of that week. This will be the first time the new band will meet as they practice the new pregame and show performances.
Band members are expected to commit to normal practices on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. On game days, the band will meet before the game and perform post-game in front of the Cougar statue outside of the stadium. The band will also perform its own concerts, separate from BYU Football games.
“These students are committed. They keep coming back to marching band,” said Fred Mcinnis, Band Director. “It doesn’t matter how hard it is, how many hours it is, or that it’s only one credit—they continue to come back because we believe first and foremost that the primary purpose of the band is to bring others to Christ.”
BYU offers a diverse marching band. Approximately 69 percent of the band comes from outside of Utah, and from 2007-2016, the band had at least one member from each state. There were also eight married couples together in the band in 2016, and the majority of band members are non-music majors.
Color guard auditions will be held July 8 with video auditions due July 10.
