Director Rosalind Hall with BYU Concert Choir

BYU’s four audition choirs will perform their annual fall choir showcase featuring classical, contemporary and sacred choral works on Oct. 3, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. The showcase will feature the BYU SingersConcert ChoirMen’s Chorus and Women’s Chorus.

“The fall choir showcase is always an exciting time to see our four auditioned choirs in their very first concert of the year,” said Associate Professor Andrew Crane, director of the BYU Singers. “The audience can expect a highly varied and exciting collection of choral works. Each of the four choirs will present a set of individual pieces, and then all 600 singers will combine to perform together at the end.”

The BYU Singers will be performing “Jerusalem, gaude gaudio magno” by Jacobus Gallus, “Autumn is Here” by Frédéric Chopin, arr. Gašper Jereb and “Avsenik Medley” (Slovenian Polka), arr. Tomaž Kozlevčar.

“These pieces are part of an upcoming 25-minute concert that we will present for the NCCO Conference this fall in Baton Rouge. I selected the three that I thought would best make a cohesive ‘set’ for BYU Singers.” said Crane.

BYU Singers will also be releasing a new CD recording, “Come and Sing Unto the Lord” at the showcase. It contains sacred pieces from their 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 repertoire. The music will also be available online the day after the concert.

“The Women’s Chorus will serve up a dramatic rendition of the beloved hymn ‘How Great Thou Art’ followed by a poignant arrangement of ‘Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier,’” said Jean Applonie, director of the Women’s Chorus. “They will conclude with a brand new arrangement of the spiritual ‘I Heard from Heaven Today’ by BYU alum Brent Wells.”

Director of Concert Choir and Men’s Chorus, Rosalind Hall, said, “In many ways, this is the most exciting choral concert of the year at BYU, when each of the four newly-formed choirs makes its very first performance on the de Jong stage.”
